To maintain your small engine properly, you need to change the oil every year.  I am going to talk about two different ways that you can do this.

1. Using an oil suction gun

To change the oil in a small engine using this method you will need an oil suction gun and something to put the oil in. First, you need to run the engine for five to ten minutes. This thins the oil so it comes out faster. Remove the dipstick and suck the oil out with the oil suction gun and put it in a container. Dispose of the used oil at your local auto parts store or landfill. Look in the owner’s manual for specifications on what type of oil you need to use to replace your oil. Use a funnel to put in the new oil.  Be careful not to overfill it!

 2. Without an oil suction gun

If you don’t use an oil suction gun, run the engine for five to ten minutes. Then tip the mower over with the dipstick facing down. Put a block under the handle and put an oil pan or something underneath to catch the oil. Open the dipstick and let the oil come out. Don’t dump the oil in the ground. Your local auto parts store usually recycles it, or the landfill will take it. Look in the owner’s manual for specifications on what type of oil you need to use to replace your oil. Use a funnel to put in the new oil. Don’t add too much oil or it will cause engine damage.

This is a simple job that will help extend the life of your small engine and a great skill for any kid to learn.
